Brief Description of Main Solutions

The project “Reconstruction of the 750 kV, 330 kV, 110kV, 35 kV switchyard at 750 kV Dniprovska, 750 kV Zaporizka, 330 kV Kharkivska, 330 kV Zalyutine substations” aims to rehabilitate urgently needed substations and corresponding transmission lines in the east of Ukraine.

The primary objectives of this project are to accommodate the peak demand and electricity consumption in the conditions of deteriorated power supply (as a consequence of damages and partial occupation of the East Ukraine), to secure a reliable operation of the power transmission system as a whole and Dniprovska and Pivnichna Power Systems in particular, as well as to prepare the Ukrainian power system for the integration with the European Network of Transmission System Operators for Electricity (“ENTSO-E”).

One key constraint is the technical condition of the high-voltage substations, most of which were constructed in the 1950s through 1970s. The deterioration of the part of high voltage facilities, some of which have exceeded their technical lifetime, can result in a general decline in reliability and quality of electricity supply and transmission. Repair and maintenance of the substations with every year require additional financing, considering that the equipment is morally obsolete and requires to keep the staff, who would be able not only to operate it, but also perform routine and capital repairs.

The national energy company NPC Ukrenergo is seeking to address the situation through the modernization of the line and substations with the prospective of their transition to the automated management and minimum of operational staff.

The rehabilitation measures include the dismantling and replacement of power equipment and related cable material as well the replacement of devices of relay protection and automatics (RPA). Additionally the erection of gas-insulated switchgears (GIS) for selected substations has been investigated. The reconstruction of the substations includes new concepts for the substations configuration, which enable Process Automatic Control System (PACS) to be implemented. The auxiliary power supply has to be rehabilitated and/or extended in selected substations in order to ensure the necessary security of supply.

The following measures are foreseen within the rehabilitation measures:

Zaporizka 750 kV:

  • one new set of 1000 MVA single phase 750/330 kV autotransformer;
  • three sets of single-phase phase-shifting transformers for the autotransformers;
  • replacement of the 750 and 330 kV high voltage equipment, except already replaced circuit breakers and current transformers;
  • part replacement of the 750 and 330 kV RPA devices;
  • replacement of auxiliary power systems including batteries.

Dniprovska 750 kV:

  • one new set of 1000 MVA single phase 750/330 kV autotransformer;
  • three sets of single-phase phase-shifting transformers for the autotransformers;
  • replacement of the 750 and 330 kV high voltage equipment, except already replaced circuit breakers and current transformers;
  • full replacement of the 750 and 330 kV RPA devices;
  • replacement of auxiliary power systems including batteries.

Kharkivska 330 kV:

  • replacement of 330 and 110 kV AIS outdoor switchgear with installation of 330 kV GIS and 110 kV HIS switchgear;
  • replacement of auxiliary power systems including batteries.

Zalyutine 330 kV:

  • replacement of 330 and 110 kV AIS outdoor switchgear with installation of 330 kV GIS and 110 kV HIS switchgear;
  • replacement of auxiliary power systems including batteries;
  • replacement of equipment of 35 kV outdoor air insulated switchgear by new.

Total budged estimated for the reconstruction of four substations is 166,6 million euro.
